Can you use kerosene in a oil lamp.?

Question:

Answer: I'm assuming you mean the kind of oil lamp which uses a wick to burn oil from a resevoir, and contains the flame under a glass chimney. Lamp oil is just purified, scented, and colored kerosene. Straight kerosene will smoke and has an oily smell, but it's perfectly useable in an oil lamp. So is diesel fuel, for that matter, but you'll have even more smoke and smell. They're the same fuel, just with varying degrees of purity. I've used lamp oil in my diesel car with no problems. However, you cannot use kerosene in a white-gas burning lamp (like a Coleman lamp) which uses a spun mantle. You will ruin that kind of lamp if you use kerosene or lamp oil.
