Question: I had a friend call me who has a female pekin duck and two male mallards that have taken a liking to the pekin. Its funny cause the males hang around and get locked up at night with the pekin and play in the stream during the day. The males are trying to breed her. Apparently they are being successfull she says. First question is, can they cross breed? Will babies hatch? Second question is, the pekin acts like it cannot walk at times. Is it possible that the other ducks may have hurt her? She will spread her wings out trying to get up a hill and flop fall down and tries to drag herself. Any ideas what may be wrong. She will stand on her legs though. Thanks in advance if anybody can answer this question seriously!
Answer: The pekin Duck is an Asian domesticated decendant from the Mallard. All known breeds of farmyard duck are decendants from the mallard with the exception of the Muscovy which is from South America. Yes the mallards can reproduce with her and the resulting offspring are likely to be both larger than the female, and also have more mallard type markings. The two Mallards are most likely to have caused her injuries as apart from humans, Mallards are one of the few species of animals that actually take a female by force. With two against one, the two males are continously taking out their sexual desires on the poor pekin, and will eventually kill her through exhausture. Also if the duck lays any eggs or hatches any ducklings, the two drakes, will and this is not a possibility but a certainty, either smash the eggs or kill the ducklings, because this allows them to then mate with the pekin again. Best idea is to either up the number of female, usually at least three ducks to each drake, or seperate the female from the boys, or simply remove one drake and get a second duck. What ever happens, unless the drake is outnumbered, the duck will always suffer
