Answer: Well if it is a "workhorse" you want, you will have to stick with a Canon lens. Lens quality aside, mechanically the lens is superior to any third party lens on the market. That would be the EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM. It is the closest to your 17~70mm zoom Canon makes.
