The Great Gatsby?

Question: Is Gatsby a phony?

Answer: I believe that everything about Gatsby has been superficial and "phony" from the beginning. He has dreamt of wealth and influence as a means of attaining Daisy, and has done so under false and illegal means. There are two distinct sides of Gatsby: Jay Gatsby and James Gatz. When Gatsby assumed the form of Gatsby, as opposed to Gatz, he became what Holden Caulfield would refer to as a "phony".
