The Great Gatsby.?

Question: at the end of the novel The Great Gatsby theres a quote by Nick "so we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past"......i want to know how the events of gatsbys life is conncected to Nicks final comment. help plss

Answer: Oh come on! Seriously, did you read? Okay, because I am feeling nice: Gatsby was stuck in the past, just like a boat being pushed against the current. His entire existence was developed to obtain the love of Daisy. He invented a new persona, he did illegal things to get money, he bought a huge house across the bay from her. He ceaselessly crafted his life on the hopes that one day he would once again be reunited with his true love and SHE would find him worthy of her. Only, Daisy loved only the trappings Gatsby had created, not he himself. When Gatsby was murdered, and the tragic events unfold, Nick's comment speaks not only of Gatsby, but of humankind as well. We are what we have been: our pasts shape us. We try to escape, but we beat on against the current of our pasts.
