Question: Thanks :) yes it is my hw don't bug me about the moral implications of asking this.

Answer: I second that. There are swarms of people when Gatsby throws a party, but not a soul in sight for his funeral. Everybody is just looking out for Number One. This becomes painfully and clearly obvious in the final moments. Gatsby, even with all of his faults and eccentricities, actually was a loving person. Unfortunately the person he placed all of his love in did not care enough about him to return it - not even enough to attend his funeral. Nick realized that nobody came to the funeral because they were too absorbed in their own lives to care - even for just one day. Supposedly it was Gatsby that was the rich, superficial jerk, when in fact it was everybody else.
