Fuel Gauge question?

Question: On a 18' sea pro. the fuel gauge doesnt work. Under the center console all the wires seem to be in place except for one out of place purple wire. Its just hanging there not attached to anything. Could that be why the gauge isnt working. Also i heard the float may be stuck. i cant find it. where on the boat would it be? what can be done to try and fix the fuel gauge?

Answer: The purple wire is the power from the ign switch Look on the back of the fuel gauge there are 4 terminals 12v or + purple 1- sender ? maybe green. 1-ground black, 1-light= blue all the gauges are usually looped to together so check an see which 1 doesn't have a purple wire on it .Check with a volt meter an see if there is power on the gauge. If so you can test the gauge by touching the sender with a ground wire only touch not hold on. with power to the gauge look at the gauge when you do this the gauge will go to full if working if not bad guage. Do the same check at the sending unit in the top of the tank if gauge works than the sender in tank is bad.The sender is in the top of the fuel tank look for a inspection plate on the deck if not you will have ot remove the floor?? Hope it's just the purple wire off. This should help you>
