Why are single-speed bikes so popular all of a sudden???

Question: Why are single-speed bikes so popular all of a sudden??? Especially in a hilly city like Portland, OR??? I don't get it. Help!!! LOL anonomis. funny sh*t

Answer: One would have to be a very strong biker to ride a single-speed. There's only one gear combo, and it's the only one you can use for riding uphill and for speed--no granny gearing nor higher-speed gear combinations. All one can rely on is his own strength, hence the sense of pride. Single-speed riders are in a very admirable class of their own. One article I read in a bike magazine adds that there is the benefit of taking in the scenery rather than be absorbed fiddling with shifters. Other benefits are less maintenance effort and cost involved, and having a lighter bike.
